- The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a fresh advisory warning Indian nationals against seeking recruitment into the Russian armed forces for monetary benefits, calling it a dangerous path that is strongly discouraged by the government.
In the advisory for Indians travelling to Russia, the MEA said it has come across numerous instances of individuals willingly seeking out offers to join the Russian armed forces, expecting to receive monetary benefits and later secure release by approaching the Indian government. "It is reiterated that this is a dangerous path and is strongly discouraged by the Government," the advisory said, adding that people should consider the gravity of such actions and understand the mortal dangers involved. The MEA also flagged that foreign nationals, including Indians, are being recruited by non-public entities such as voluntary groups, not just official channels. The Ministry separately cautioned Indians against giving up their citizenship and taking Russian passports in order to enlist, calling this a "major concern" and noting it is the first time the government has publicly flagged this particular route. It said India remains "continuously engaged" with Russian authorities to ensure the safety, well-being and early discharge of Indian nationals already serving in the Russian armed forces. The advisory follows continuing reports of Indian nationals, many from Punjab, Haryana and Jammu, being recruited into the war in Ukraine; Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had earlier disclosed that 227 Indian nationals had been recruited into the Russian armed forces since the start of the war.
