- A BJP delegation led by former chief minister B S Yediyurappa met Karnataka DGP-IGP M A Saleem demanding withdrawal of FIRs registered against party workers over Form 7 applications filed during the Special Intensive Revision, warning of a statewide agitation if the cases continue.
The delegation, which included Yediyurappa, BJP state president and MLA B Y Vijayendra, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, along with several MPs, MLAs and MLCs, visited the DGP's office on Nrupathunga Road in Bengaluru on Saturday and submitted a memorandum. The BJP has urged the police department to ensure that complaints regarding Form-7 applications submitted during the SIR process are dealt with strictly in accordance with the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and not under what the party called political pressure from the state government. Vijayendra, who had separately met the DGP-IGP earlier in the week, alleged that the FIRs registered against BJP workers were filed under pressure from the Congress-led state government, and warned that the party was ready to go to any extent to defend its workers, including launching protests outside police stations if the cases were not withdrawn. Yediyurappa alleged that after Chief Minister D K Shivakumar staged a sit-in and dharna at the Chief Electoral Officer's office, police officials were now working to appease the government, and demanded that the pattern of FIRs come to an end immediately. The BJP's intervention comes amid the registration of multiple FIRs across Karnataka, including in Mysuru, Belagavi and Bidar, over allegations that Form-7 applications were used by BJP workers and leaders to seek deletion of Muslim and Dalit voters' names from the electoral rolls, allegations the party has rejected as baseless.
