- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders across the political spectrum paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 122nd birth anniversary on October 2, recalling his simplicity and his iconic "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" slogan.
PM Modi visited Vijay Ghat in the morning and paid floral tribute to Shastri, also releasing a video recalling his contribution to the nation and his famous call of "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan," which highlighted the vital role of India's soldiers and farmers. This year's observance coincided with Gandhi Jayanti, since Shastri was born on October 2, 1904, the same date as Mahatma Gandhi's birth in 1869. A programme was held at Vijay Ghat in Delhi attended by the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several others. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute to both leaders, calling them "great sons of the country" and urging people to follow their guidance, while President Droupadi Murmu separately remembered Shastri's dedication to the nation. Shastri's sons and former MPs, Anil and Sunil Shastri, recalled their father's simplicity and honesty, with Sunil Shastri saying the "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" slogan "remains relevant today." Shastri served as India's second Prime Minister and led the country during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, a period during which the slogan became especially prominent.
