Indian Navy to Add 18 Warships in 2026, Biggest-Ever Single-Year Fleet Expansion

- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Indian Navy will induct or commission 18 warships in 2026, marking the largest single-year addition to the force in its history, with more than 75 per cent indigenous content.
Singh made the announcement while addressing the Indian Navy's second biannual Commanders' Conference of 2026 in New Delhi on September 29. He described it as the largest single-year force accretion in the Navy's history, with the planned inductions including both frontline combat platforms and specialised support vessels, all built at Indian shipyards. He highlighted that recently commissioned Indian warships carry more than 75 per cent indigenous content, underlining the country's growing self-reliance in naval shipbuilding. The expansion comes as the Navy works towards a fleet of more than 200 ships by 2035, with Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan separately indicating a longer-term goal of around 230 ships by 2040-45. Singh also called for a significant upgrade of India's maritime surveillance architecture, noting that Indian warships are now operating as far afield as the South China Sea, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, which he said demonstrates the Navy's blue-water capability. He described India's position in the Indian Ocean Region as that of a "First Responder" and "Preferred Security Partner," and said the government is also looking to position India as a future exporter of warships built on its indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem.
