- The INDIA bloc announced district-level "Save Democracy" marches across the country from October 2 to 8, along with a joint march by all opposition MPs to the Election Commission on October 6, over the SIR row and allegations against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
The decisions were taken at a roughly three-and-a-half-hour INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi, attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule, among others. Announcing the programme, Kharge said "Save Democracy" marches will be held at the district level from October 2 to October 8, involving young people and NGOs alongside demonstrations outside district magistrates' offices. He said all opposition MPs will then march to the Election Commission on October 6 to raise concerns over the electoral roll revision exercise. Opposition leaders also plan to seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October to raise what they describe as concerns over the "takeover of institutions," and the bloc announced five major rallies to be held in October and November, with dates and venues to be finalised later, focused on what they call the "vote chori" allegations tied to the SIR process. Kharge said the meeting also discussed the demand for a return to paper ballots over EVMs, claiming the parties present at the meeting supported it. Some reports quote Kharge describing CEC Gyanesh Kumar as acting like a "puppet" of the ruling party. This is not the first such march; a similar attempt by opposition MPs earlier this year to march to the ECI office was blocked by security personnel.
