Key Highlights
  • Captain Smit Machchhar spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone from his hospital bed, recounting how, despite being seriously injured and lying on the cockpit floor, he told himself to get up and act, and managed to open the cockpit door during the September 30 flydubai emergency.

According to accounts of the call, Machchhar described realising that the aircraft was descending rapidly even as he lay bleeding on the cockpit floor after being attacked by his co-pilot. He said he told himself he needed to get up and act, and despite his injuries managed to reach and open the cockpit door, which allowed crew members, passengers and two off-duty flydubai pilots travelling onboard to enter, restrain the attacker and help bring the aircraft under control. The plane had plunged around 17,000 feet before the situation stabilised, and it was eventually landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. PM Modi had earlier called Machchhar's actions those of a "HERO" on social media, saying his valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a major tragedy. The call from his hospital bed came as Machchhar continues to recover following emergency surgery in Saudi Arabia and his subsequent airlift to the UAE. His account has added to the wave of recognition for his actions, including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Gujarat government, which announced it would honour him with the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award.
