Key Highlights
  • The Gandak river, swollen after heavy rains in Nepal and Bihar, breached embankments at multiple points in West and East Champaran, flooding villages and disrupting connectivity in the region.

In West Champaran, the Champaran embankment suffered breaches at four locations, with a fresh breach reported near Khairtwa village, sending floodwater into agricultural fields and threatening low-lying areas of three villages. The Gandak reached a record level of 91.25 metres at Bagaha, well above the danger mark, disrupting roads and settlements around Bagaha and Valmikinagar. In East Champaran, the ring embankment in Areraj was damaged, inundating nearby villages, while the Zamindari embankment at Sheetalpur-Banjariya in Gopalganj was also breached. More than 200 villages across North Bihar have been affected, with West Champaran, East Champaran and Gopalganj among the worst-hit districts, and floodwaters spreading further to Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran. The Water Resources Department has deployed engineering teams to Bagaha, Bettiah, Motihari and Gopalganj for flood-control work, and relief and rescue operations are underway. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of West Champaran and instructed officials to remain on high alert and ensure timely rescue, relief and essential services in the affected areas. This flood spell follows a broader crisis; Bihar floods have separately been reported to have affected over 50 lakh people across 15 districts this season.
