- Traffic police later asked Dutta to get the challan reversed after he raised the issue online.
Souvik Dutta was riding his wife's two-wheeler alone in Bengaluru and was wearing a helmet when an AI-based traffic camera allegedly interpreted the guitar strapped to his back as a helmetless pillion passenger. The challan was issued to his wife's account because she was the registered owner of the vehicle. The image attached to the notice showed Dutta wearing a helmet with the guitar behind him. The challan was dated September 16 for an alleged violation recorded on September 15. Dutta posted the notice on X on September 26, tagged Bengaluru City Traffic Police and asked for the challan to be revoked. He also questioned the accuracy of AI-based violation detection. The traffic police responded to Dutta and asked him to get the challan reversed. The incident subsequently went viral on social media, with users discussing the reliability of automated traffic enforcement systems and the challenges involved in distinguishing people from objects in camera images.
